Review: In the Shadow of the Moonlight – The Awakening

In the Shadow of the Moonlight - The Awakening
In the Shadow of the Moonlight – The Awakening by J. J. Bidell

The characters in this book are lovable and awkward. A coming-of-age story about a girl destined to morph into a panther, we follow Naomi from her home to overseas and faraway United States where she’ll complete a semester abroad in a sports program. While there, her destiny as a sometimes-feline is realized. Love, jealousy, intrigue pepper these pages and there is a good story here.

Technically, this book was translated from German … and it shows. The unnatural affect of the dialogue bleeds into the characters, and I find myself viewing poor Naomi as an awkward foreigner. I think she is much more powerful than that, and I wished the translation could have included some further finesse.

Overall, though, this was a fun read, and I look forward to the next book in the series to follow up on what happens with these characters!
